Week 3: History and Workings of the U.S Supreme Court

“The Supreme Court remains the most powerful judicial body on earth.” The Constitution does not solidify the exact powers of the Supreme Court. They left it to Congress and the Justices of the Court to develop those powers over time.

The first assembly of the Supreme Court was on February 1, 1790 in New York City, although it was postponed until February 2nd. When the Supreme Court sessions first began, it was just to develop organizational proceedings. The first cases to reach the Supreme Court was after their first year, this case was West v. Barnes.

Presidents appoint members of the Supreme Court, which can be subject to approval by the Senate. This ensures an independent Judiciary and protect judges from their power.

Before 1869 the Justices on the Supreme Court changed over six times before residing at the present number of 9. Since the courts beginnings there has only been 17 Chief Justices, and 102 associate Justices.

In my opinion the Supreme Court was assembled in a time that we do not live in anymore. The fact the people can serve for a lifetime is ridiculous. They are serving in a time they can not keep up with. Also, I believe that there should be an age limit. You should be aware of the time that you are in and how to maneuver through those times.
