Week 7: Twitter

Twitter came from a broadcasting company Odeo, but later acquired by Jack Dorsey, Evans Williams and Biz Stone on July 15th, 2006. 6 months after the site we know as Twitter today was released as Twttr later changed their name to Twitter.

Twitter first started as a side project, a free app that allowed the users to share status updates with a group of friends by send text messages to the number 40404. As years progressed Twitter became more complexed and became on of the world's leading social media platforms.

Timeline of Twitter 

October 2006: Jack Dorsey, Evans Williams and Biz Stone acquired Twitter from Odeo.

March 2007: Best startup at South by Southwest receiving mainstream recognition.

April 2007:Twitter becomes their own company. Dorsey is chosen as CEO.

June 2007: Twitter raises $5 million and received a valuation of $20 million.

August 2007: Hashtag "#" debut

October 2008: Dorsey is removed as CEO due frustration over continued server failure

April 2009: First Twitter feud begins between Ashton Kutcher and CNN over who will be the first to acquire 1 million followers. Ashton won.

April 2009: New twitter executives Evans and Stone are listed on 100 most influential people.

April 2010: Promoted tweets are released.

July 2011: White House host a Twitter meeting with Barack Obama

December 2012:  Twitter has 200 million active followers

November: Angry Twitter employee deactivates Donald Trumps twitter

June 2019: Twitter accounts are shown to be linked with accounts with Iran and Russia. 

Despite the numerous changes of CEO, rogue employees, spam accounts, and foreign accounts Twitter still reigns as one of the top social media platforms.
